Extra Notes: Since the picture in the book represents this pattern fairly accurately, I thought it would be interesting to see the swatch using a variegated yarn for one of the colors. If the two yarns are in the same family, the effect changes from one of a solid stripe background to effectively softening the variegated effect. The following swatches mimic the solid colors used in the book:

After I finished knitting, I looked at the swatch and realized I made a mistake and inadvertently skipped a row when I put the piece down for a break. In a project situation I would of course fix it, but as a swatch I think it shows that the pattern can be easily shortened if you are so inclined. Here’s the full picture:

It’s definitely not reversible, but the wrong side is tidy and looks a bit like quilted garter stitch.
