Little Hourglass Ribbing

Little_Hourglass_Ribbing_DK

Yarn: Fibranatura Baby Merino (Emily – bright pink)

Wraps Per Inch: 11 wpi (per Ravelry yarn database)

Needles: 3.25mm (US 3)

Gauge: 27 sts/32 rows = 4″

Pattern: Little Hourglass Ribbing

Stitch Count Repeat:  Multiple of 4sts

Book: A Treasury of Knitting Patterns

Page: 41

Difficult Techniques:  Somewhat challenging to knit into front and back of two stitches at once.

Comments: Lays flat. Stitch count changes on row 3 so counting stitches on (or immediately after) this row could lead to confusion.  I originally knit this using Cascade 220 but I didn’t think it looked very good.  I’ve added photos of that swatch to my flicker account.  If you’re interested you can see them here.

Grand Trefoil

Grand Trefoil
Yarn: Cascade 220
Wraps Per Inch: 10 wpi
Needles: US #6
Gauge: 11 sts X 18 rows over 4 inches X 4 inches (10 cm X 10 cm) in pattern
Pattern: Grand Trefoil
Stitch Count Repeat: Multiple of 5 plus 3
Book: A Second Treasury of Knitting
Chapter: Lace Patterns
Page: 263

Like most lace, this pattern needs vigorous blocking or it looks a bit of a mess. I could have stretched it even more if I’d used a looser cast on and bind off and hadn’t surrounded the swatch with a garter stitch border. Walker does recommend a very loose cast on and bind off in the book. It’s a garter-based lace and as such, is reversible and does not curl. No picture of the back this time. The book appears to show the pattern in a crochet cotton thread or lace-weight type of yarn so I thought I’d try it in worsted weighted weight. A very easy pattern but it helps to pay attention as picking up dropped stitches is a challenge.

Pier-Glass Pattern

Pier-Glass Pattern
Yarn: Cascade 220
Wraps Per Inch: 10 wpi
Needles: US #6
Gauge: 22 sts X 26 rows over 4 inches X 4 inches (10 cm X 10 cm) in pattern
Pattern: Pier-Glass Pattern
Stitch Count Repeat: Multiple of 13 plus 1
Book: A Second Treasury of Knitting
Chapter: Twist-Stitch Patterns

Notes: Not as elastic as ribbing, but a stretchy fabric. Walker recommends knitting with smallish needles and I agree that it looks best when knit at a tighter gauge than recommended for the yarn. If I did it again, I’d probably go down at least a needle size.
