this is really interesting. I wonder what it would look like with a knit background, instead of a purl background….

I think it depends which bit of the braid you’d prefer to have standing out the most.
If you worked it on a stockinette background, you’d probably lose some of the definition of the stockinette section of the braid . Rather like now where the moss/seed stitch bit is less well defined because it’s against the reverse stockinette background as defined in the chart.
